Welcome to the Grad Life

It’s been awhile since I’ve been in school.  Five years, to be exact.  I spent that time working and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.  It took a lot of soul searching, but I landed on TESOL.  It combines my love of languages and teaching.  And the one thing I kept hearing from everyone when asking about career advice was this: be passionate about what you do.  So here I am.

I cannot believe this was just over five years ago.

It’s taken a little adjusting to get back into the swing of school, but I’m finding that it’s like riding a bike.  A lot of my academic habits are still very much engrained in me, so now it’s just a matter of dusting them off and putting them to use.  And it turns out a lot of my classmates feel the same way.  A decent number of us in the TESOL program took time off between undergrad and grad school.  It’s nice to know that I’m not alone on that front!

This semester, I’m in three classes:

Approaches to Teaching English
Educational Linguistics
Teaching Second Language Writing

I plan to blog about what I’m doing for them, as well as about my life in Philly.  I just moved here from Chicago, so there is no shortage of things for me to explore and do when I don’t have my nose buried in a book or am in class.

This blog is also here to help you.  Yes, YOU!  So if you have questions or want me to cover a certain topic, don’t be shy.  Leave me a comment and let me know.

I am really looking forward to writing about my first year as a TESOL student at GSE.  And I hope you enjoy reading what I have to say.  It’s going to be a good time!
