Hitting the Books in Philly – Education Commons

I’m really torn about this post. While on the one hand, I really want to tell you about the Education Commons, but on the other hand I don’t because I love this place and not a ton of people know about it.  I’m afraid to let the secret out!  But, I thought about it and decided to tell you guys about this gem.  As they say, share the wealth.

Whenever I have to do group work, my favorite place to hit up is the Education Commons.  One reason I really love it is because it is a good halfway(ish) point between GSE and my house.   It’s located inside the stadium (yes, you read that correctly).  I think that’s why a lot of people don’t know it exists.

Looking at the stadium, would you expect a study space to be in there?  Me neither.

When you walk around to the side of the stadium to Gate 2, there is an entrance to a gym as well as the entrance to the Education Commons.  They’ve add a sign (about time!) so that you know where to go because it can be a little confusing.  My first time coming here I was so lost.  Once you’re inside, you head up to the third floor and you’re there!

The Education Commons has a lot of great group study rooms that are equipped with all sorts of technology and white boards/markers.  You can check out the tech specs here.  What’s really cool about all the library-run study spaces on campus is that you can book rooms online ahead of time, which I do quite frequently for group projects.  They only let you do it a week in advance at most, so around midterms and finals you really have to be on top of your game and get a room as soon as you can because they fill up quite fast.

Not only are there rooms for groups to work in, but there are a ton of chairs and booths for individuals to use for studying.  This area tends to be pretty quiet, so it’s a good place to concentrate.

One of my favorite things about the Education Commons is that there are a ton of windows (as you can see here), so you can bask in the sunlight.  And the paint colors they used are pretty light, so you don’t feel like your stuck in a dungeon.  Sometimes libraries can feel dark and dreary, so having these windows and light colors are fantastic.

Another cool feature of the Education Commons – body bean bags.  Yes, you read that correctly.  You’ll often see people taking naps in between classes on these things.  I think it’s fantastic.  I haven’t used one yet, but I’m sure I will one day.

So now that the secret is out, go hit up the Education Commons when on campus!
